Set in the urban context of Southwest Philadelphia, this facility has been a place to call home to senior residents for many years. Greenway Presbyterian Apartments, providing 67 apartments, Ann Thomas Apartments offers 74 apartment homes, and Mary Field Presbyterian Apartments offers 99 apartment homes through HUD Affordable Housing.
These three apartment complexes were in need of a gathering space to function as the ‘central green’ for the campus, an inviting retreat from the urban context of the surrounding environment. The intent of this space is to improve the wellbeing and economic vitality of the community. Working with staff, materials and colors were selected to integrate the design with the surrounding architecture. A looped walkway amidst lush plantings adds a soft visual buffer to the parking areas. Plantings spill into a dry creek bed flowing beneath a foot bridge. Gardens open up to a large pavilion offering a sheltered patio for community events or a quiet lunch with family.
