This Five Star facility, located in Hagerstown Maryland, includes a Memory Support addition along with renovation of the existing facility. Creating two new courtyard gardens for passive activities, as well as for viewing, accommodates the new building additions by KCBA Architects, along with the renovation of two existing courtyards.
Redesign included the existing sitting area at entrance to new 16 unit addition, expanding main entrance landscape, and incorporating modifications to existing storm water patterns. New outdoor spaces include site furnishings, lighting, a water wall, artificial turf, a raised planter, and potted bamboo. Courtyard spaces were planted with perennials for reduced maintenance and storm water basins were planted with perennials and grasses. A sculpture artist was hired to incorporate a relief of poppies as a symbol of remembrance on the face of the stone water wall. The activities director actively uses the water element and raised gardens for therapy and overall wellness, through listening to the water wall, touching the relief of the sculpture and reading to the residents.
